I was there

Brunei vs Myanmar

I think a lot of you have come across THIS article about how embarrassing it was for the whole of Brunei for the act of some disrespectful hooligans towards the Myanmar supporters.

I have to say that I was totally embarrassed because I was there and I saw what happened. We sat a few steps away from the Myanmar supporters and we actually witnessed Bruneians throwing things at the Burmese. To top it off, it wasn't just "things" you know, they threw RUBBISH to these poor supporters. I was angered at the fact that one person hit the head of an older Myanmar supporter, and when a younger counterpart tried to defend him and complaint to the Bruneian policeman who was standing there right behind them, the police just smiled and nodded not doing anything! What sort of a job is that? The police was posted there NOT to put a close watch on the game BUT on the people who were in grave danger of such acts of stupidity. At another time, I think it was after the second Brunei goal, somebody from the above seats threw hard something and it hit a young Burmese girl's head and she CRIED! Nobody defended her! Sure, a police officer went up and "attempted" to "catch" the culprit but when the person was like, "Bukan aku!" the police relented. I was frustrated! I even saw one of the policemen quietly taking a picture of the flags being hoisted along the stadium's path WHEN the chaos was happening. He was totally ignoring what was happening behind him. Why. What is wrong with the system?

I don't get it. Seriously, I don't.

Because if that was to happen to a small number of Bruneian supporters in a place where majority of the supporters were Burmese, they will NOT disrespect us the way we disrespected them.

And honestly, I think Bruneians just LOVE to HATE others. They didn't even realise that the people who trained in GREEN were Bruneians so they boo-ed these people ignorantly. Yes, ignorant. That's the word. I think that's a typical Bruneian attitude, isn't it? Hating people without checking truths beforehand. This doesn't just apply to football either, in real life when friends hate somebody they don't even know, as long as their other friends hate that person, they'll be hating that person as well. Why is that? I really don't get this kind of attitude. It doesn't show MIB and it doesn't show a respectable human trait. And then when the Burmese actually came out, the Bruneian supporters boo-ed these people too! So if both teams were boo-ed and humiliated publicly like that, who are we actually supporting? Were we just there to escape work, family and chores at home? Were we just there to release our tension at work? Come give me your answers because I surely cannot understand this kind of lame attitude.

And it's so typical for people to hina and condescend these people by saying things like, "Balik tah! Kalau esok rumah inda siap awas!" So typically Bruneians only think of expatriates as people who build houses here? But what about those supporters I saw rocking a really smart attire, with their ties and tailored pants? Are those house builders as well? And what is SO mightily embarrassing about building houses? Don't you know that it is a noble thing building shelter for families and actually giving them a roof to sleep under? Don't you know by helping us build our roads and houses and all those that Bruneians are too embarrassed to venture to they are actually gaining more good deed than us? Some of these expats are even earning MORE than some of those Bruneians and at least they earn something to make better their living as compared to Bruneians who are too damn choosy and stay unemployed for years?

Think about it.

Sure it's rules of the game but when it becomes personal like that, you ought to think about your safety for here and the afterlife because, my friends, you were not being smart enough.

When the Bruneian national anthem was played the Burmese stood up and respected us but when theirs played they were boo-ed. What does that say about the people of Brunei. You tell me.

I hope it's a better scene later at the stadium with Brunei going against Indonesia.

  1. Well said Nisa! and i agree with you about some Bruneians attitude towards expatriates. Di mata Allah semua sama tidak kira bangsa atau negara. sometimes i feel sorry for those people that think that they are much more better or smarter than others.kalau nada orang2 macamani nada rumah bebangun di Brunei ani. my point is we respect other people as human being and insyallah the worlds gonna be a better place for everybody.

    1. You're right babe, no one is lesser than the other, nor greater. I don't understand how some Bruneians minds work. Kuat menghina and caci cela, they have to think about how they come out in front of God one day.

  2. I was appalled with the bruneian supporters during match with Myanmar.. i can accept the boo-ing as i understand that's just part of the whole football thing BUT not when national anthems are played. the chants were initially harmless up to a point where people start spitting vulgar comments and giving the middle fingers. i feel so sorry for Myanmar supporters as they had to endure such condescending behaviour. i myself was sitting just few seats away from the opposing team's supporters (di bawah) and i was surprised to read about the "throwing rubbish" articles earlier today. for shame, bruneians.. some people could've ended being really hurt, na'uzubillah.. being the host doesnt mean that we have the right to act like such. cuba tah kalau tani di negeri org lain kana buat cematu apa rasanya? you just dont do that to another human being.

i have so much respect for the Myanmar supporters. although literally a minority during the match, their voices and support for their team showed just how "together" they are as one. a small portion of us bruneian fans, however, chose to act rowdy and disrespectful. where's the sportsmanship? kalau org start kan mengucap2 and act inappropriately, that doesnt mean that you have to follow. that's not how we return their favour. ada drg cari kelahi kan? ada drg main2kan lagu kebangsaan kitani? ada drg ucap2 kitani masa team drg goal? menyuruh balik rumah apa? no, i dont think so. when their team scored the first goal, of course lah drg happy and ecstatic. they didnt go about telling bruneian supporters to go home or things like that. do not celebrate other peoples' losses and/or condemn their wins. it's not right.

and i wont get started on the ticketing procedure today. was there to try my luck but the sight of the "queue" completely turned me off. end up having breakfast with my friend, alhamdulillah :) maybe ada hikmah of not getting a ticket and not watching the match live tonight. i wouldnt want to join the sea of crowd beasak2, behimpit2 just to find out that ticket habis. rawan hatiku meliat ada yg membawa babies and/or kanak2 just to get the tickets. as i said before, we cant predict what's gonna happen, but the risk is there..

hopefully this wont happen again tonight, insya Allah, amin.

    2. You''re welcome, I'm so glad there are other Bruneians who feel appalled at what happened that night during Myanmar and again last night was terrible, all because Bruneians showed how unethical they were. But congratulations to the Bruneian lads for being the HBT champion!

    3. Rody, we weren't gonna go last night but our patriotism got the better of us! It was so good to hear no boos during the Indonesian national anthem but some people at the back tried to be rude by playing their stupid vuvuzelas until somebody stopped them. My words just cannot express how embarrassed I am right now. They think that these Indos will not throw back things at them, we have seen how they have fought for so many things. Bruneians need to think before they act.

    4. I went on Friday. It was a much better. Indonesian's actually started some trouble outside the stadium. I've updated my blog and included a video of the chaos outside. I finally got in though and it was a great atmosphere, very proud moment for Brunei. Check out my updated blog.

    5. Very proud moment indeed. I sat inside on the orange chairs to the right of the roofed area and people from our side actually started throwing bottles towards the Indo supporters. Heard an occassion outside also that the Bruneians started throwing bottles to the Indo supporters from the top without knowing there were Bruneians there too. The Indos actually protected the Bruneians who were with them because there were ladies and children present. My friends sister got hit on the head with a bottle and a Bruneian was the one who threw that bottle. When Brunei got their first goal, Bruneians and Indos danced together in harmony but not until some idiot started throwing bottles. I'm just really disappointed with how some hosts cannot respect their guests. At least if it was in the spirit of the game they should still think about how inhumane it is to treat people wrongly.

    1. LOL I don't think "Terlalu Excited" would justify being rude by throwing rubbish to other people. Kalau kamu excited jumpa kawan2 yang baru balik from overseas you don't throw rubbish at them. But nonetheless I'm sure you're not one of those barbaric fans who stood there flicking the opposing team because you sound smart :)

Kudos to Tebuan for being the champions.

    1. Well lets just hope this is sincere more than a mockery towards how certain people feel about something. It's good that you're standing up for other well-behaved supporters. Keep it up.

  5. Well Nisa what you said is true. Some of us in Brunei, their eyes and ears are not open yet. Their mind set are still dependent. I am one of the Bruneian people which is working in building construction industries do feel embarrassing when i first joint the the company. I am the one and only Bruneian Malay working in management in one of the leading Building contractor in Brunei. The rest of my col luge are foreigner engineer. Where are the Bruneian Construction Site Engineer? Yet Bruneian people are so proud of the building they had in Brunei. When I am talking to those my friend foreign engineer they had been in Brunei for the pass 30 years of their life, and they had build many monument in Brunei for their own self satisfactions and successful project. What Do We Have?

When they ask me what is your achievement after all of this time? I do feel a bit embarrassing because i don't have anything to be proud of. The only answer i had is

" you people may had lots of achievement in building in most of the infrastructure in this country, my job is only producing oil and gas for this nation. without the people like me you are not coming here looking for fortune in our country, the job i did before, is the one that feeds all of us in the country."
